Resources to Help Families in Need During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The QTSR Community Association received the following message with resources to help families in need in our city:

I am a school based social worker with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.  As a department we are reaching out to all community associations in the city, to bring awareness to how we are supporting families in dire need of basic necessities during this time.

The Education Foundation of Ottawa, supporting vulnerable OCDSB families with basic needs, recently acquired a new fund called Bridges Over Barriers. The Bridges Over Barriers Fund idea came from Drs. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng and Michael Hartwick, who were inspired by the desire to commemorate their colleague and friend, Dr. Rick Hodder; a Critical Care Physician at The Ottawa Hospital with a deep commitment to the common good.

The Bridges Over Barriers fund is currently providing students and their families impacted by the global Covid-19 pandemic with grocery cards in order to meet their most basic need for food. Food insecurity is an especially present and urgent concern in Ottawa and many families are unable to provide the basics under these circumstances. Our OCDSB Social Workers are referring families to the fund once all community resources (including local food banks) have been exhausted. Our Social Work team would like to make you aware of this fund since many have asked how they can help directly and immediately. To donate, please visit:

Feel free to share this information with your Community Association members. Charitable tax receipts will be provided by the Education Foundation of Ottawa automatically when donations are made online. For more information about the Education Foundation of Ottawa, please contact Clarissa Arthur, Executive Director at educationfoundation@ocdsb.ca
