Smart City 2.0 – Ottawa’s Smart City Strategy

Being a smart city is important to Ottawa!

Last year, City Council approved its Smart City Strategy, Smart City 2.0, paving the way for Ottawa to become an even more connected, innovative, and prosperous city than it is today. Now, the City needs your help create a competitive bid for the Government of Canada's Smart Cities Challenge.

Answer our questionnaire before March 11, 2018. Your answers will help the City identify the most important challenges our communities will face in the future:

  • How can the City better use technology to make Ottawa an even better place to live, work and play?
  • Think BIG! Think BOLD! THINK OUT-OF-THE BOX!

Visit ottawa.ca/smartcity for all the details.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Kilreen Park with their shovels to clear off snow and to those who helped to flood the rink after this winter's freeze-thaw cycles. We would not be able to maintain a community rink without you!

News Brief - OCDSB Capital Priorities-Setting Consultation Process 2018

NEWS BRIEF

Capital Priorities-Setting Consultation Process 2018

Many school communities have questions about how decisions are made regarding the construction of new schools and additions. Ultimately, the Ministry of Education of Ontario makes these decisions through the approval of funding for capital projects - this is done as funding for new pupil places, additional pupil places, and in limited cases, it may also include the rebuilding of existing schools.
These funding decisions are made by the Ministry based on a list of capital priorities approved by the Board. In recent years this process has taken place on an annual basis. It is anticipated that the next Ministry call for capital submissions will come during the spring of 2018. In anticipation of the call, the capital priorities-setting consultation process was approved by the Board in November of 2017.

District Needs Analysis (DNA)

The District Needs Analysis (DNA) is one tool to assist Board during the 2018 capital priorities decision-making process and consultation. The DNAs will also inform the process over the next few years.  Other factors that are weighed in the process include, but are not limited to, child care needs, requirements of potential community hubs or partnerships, and needs resulting from reviews that serve to impact the student learning environment. The District Needs Analysis is two documents- one elementary and one secondary.

DNA packages for both the elementary and secondary panels have been prepared.  In accordance with Board policy, DNAs are to be updated on a four-year basis moving forward, that timing aligning with the second year of a trustee term.  Learn more.
How to Provide Your Input

A webpage dedicated to the capital priorities-setting process is located on the District website by clicking on the following tabs - Board of Trustees/Consultations/Other Consultations and Reviews/ OCDSB 2018 Capital Priorities-Setting Consultation Process.

Artefact Showcase

Example of a chair from the royal streetcar (1901)When royalty take public transportation, they ride in style! At least that was the case in 1901 when the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York visited Ottawa during their tour of the British Empire. A private royal streetcar was outfitted especially for the future King George V and Queen consort Mary. The opulent furnishings included 14 of the chair pictured here and the streetcar itself stood as a demonstration of the manufacturing skill of the Ottawa Car Company. You can learn more about the history of streetcars and rail in Ottawa as part of the upcoming City in Motion exhibition.

Sneak Peek at City in Motion

An exciting new exhibition is coming to your City of Ottawa Museums this spring and you can get a sneak peak at the Atrium Gallery, Ben Franklin Place beginning March 15. City in Motion will take you on a journey through Ottawa’s transportation history from birch bark canoes to electric rail and beyond! Following its run at Ben Franklin Place, the exhibition preview will also be on display at City Hall before all four complete modules open at Billings Estate National Historic Site, Cumberland Heritage Village Museum, Nepean Museum and Pinhey’s Point Historic Site respectively in May.

Family fun at Nepean Museum

Did you know Nepean Museum is open all winter? Take a break from the chilly weather and step inside to explore our latest exhibition: Play! The building blocks of learning. Play! is a hands-on museum experience, perfect for kids of all ages (and adults who are kids at heart). Visit our website for information on hours of operation.

Want to Support Our Community Rink?

Are you looking for a way to support our community skating rink in Kilreen Park?

Whenever it snows we need help clearing off the ice. If you have a few minutes to spare, then bring a shovel out to the park and help us clear off some snow...and you can enjoy a skate afterwards.

The more people who come out and help, the easier it is to keep the ice clear. It is a good way to get some exercise and to meet your neighbours.

Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability (CAFES) discussion on City of Ottawa Waste issues

Hello CAFES folks, WWO supporters, and interested friends,

In partnership with Waste Watch Ottawa (WWO), I would like to invite you to our next Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability (CAFES) meeting on the subject of *waste*.

10:30am -12:30pm - Saturday February 10 2018
Glebe Community Centre, 175 Third Avenue

Please RSVP at this link so we know how many chairs and how much coffee/tea and snacks to get
We are currently shaping the agenda. Our thinking is along these lines.

Objectives:
1 -- share knowledge and learn more from each other about waste management and waste diversion issues in Ottawa including:
     - status & future plans of City of Ottawa
     - what are implications of Waste Free Ontario Act? When will there be new regs?
     - what is impact on Ottawa of recent Chinese policy decision to stop importing global recyclables?

2 -- Discuss and crystalize
-- some questions to raise at the Jan 20 City of O Environment Committee mtg that has a waste update on the agenda
-- what are the pointy waste issues for the fall municipal election?

3 -- Discuss and crystalize
--- what are some messages that we can take back to MPP Yasir Naqvi who has welcomed a meeting with us to talk about waste issues (and identify who wants to come do that)
-- what are the pointy waste issues for the June provincial election?

The idea is to have lots of sharing, listening, discussion. If you have a (short) presentation you would like to make on a local waste issue please flag this for organizers in the comments/suggestions box of the RSVP form please.
Resources : We will also circulate some waste management information in the next short while, both for the meeting and for people who are interested in this but cannot attend the meeting. If you have a document or a link that you think adds core info to this topic (locally, Ottawa), please send to akellerherzog@gmail.com
Stay in the loop with CAFES: If you are active with your community association and are interested in environmental issues, sign up here for the CAFES Google group.
Cheers (and apologies for the somewhat short notice)
