Ottawa Police Service - New Telephone Number / Le Servie de police d'Ottawa - un numéro de téléphone unique

Effective April 26, 2017, the OPS will be introducing a single telephone number in which to contact us for all non-emergency enquiries. If you need to reach police by telephone for a non-emergency, you can call (613) 236-1222 to report any type of report from vehicle theft to harassment complaints. Also, instead of having to find the proper extension to reach a desired party, our new automated Integrated Voice Response (IVR) system will connect you to the right section or person.

All emergency or life-threatening calls will continue to be made utilizing 9-1-1.

In response to evolving technology, residents may instead choose to file a complaint online.  Some of the reports you are now easily able to file online include: Thefts, Damage to Property, Traffic Complaints, Drug Complaints, Fraud Complaints, and Hate Crimes. Residents can also utilize our on-line service if they wish to add supplemental information to an existing report.

Community Yard Sale Coming Up in May

It is starting to feel a bit more like spring. As you are getting out to start work on your gardens and to undertake your spring cleaning remember that the Queensway Terrace South Ridgeview Community Yard Sale is coming up in the last weekend of May.

This is a great opportunity to clear out items that you don’t use any more and could make another person happy. Some of our neighbours raised money for their favour charitable causes. Last year members of our community sold a range of items including:

·         Children’s toys
·         Furniture
·         Kitchen wear
·         Sports equipment
·         Books
·         Ornaments
·         Clothing

The community yard sale is a great opportunity to do some good, meet your neighbours, and maybe even find a new treasured item for yourself!

Date: Saturday May 27th, 8:00 to Noon

QTSR Community Garage Sale

The Queensway Terrace South Ridgeview Community Garage Sale will be taking place on Saturday, May 27th from 8am to noon.

Everyone in the community is welcome to set up their own garage sale in their yard on this day. We have also had some successful lemonade stands in the neighbourhood in previous years.

The QTSR Community Association will be putting up some signs around our neighbour to promote the event, but we could always use more signs to attract more people to the community for the garage sale.

We welcome members of our community to prepare garage sale signs to help promote the event and we are going to be giving a prize to one lucky sign maker. To participate in the sign contest, take a picture of your sign and upload it either to our QTSRCA Facebook page or twitter using the tag #QTSRCAgaragesale before noon on Saturday, May 27th.

City of Ottawa - Street sweeping operations now in effect

The City of Ottawa's winter overnight parking restrictions are now completed for the 2016-2017 season.  The City would like to thank you for your cooperation in making our streets safer throughout the winter season.

On Sunday, April 9 City of Ottawa crews will begin the annual city-wide sweeping of streets and sidewalks, including both daytime and night-time operations. These operations are necessary to remove debris, dust and sand that accumulated over the winter months.

In addition to the city-wide sweeping operations, the City completes concentrated sweeping operations in neighbourhoods that support continuous on-street parking.
During concentrated street sweeping debris from boulevards, sidewalks and medians is swept or flushed onto the roadway, where a vacuum truck then picks up the majority of grit, debris, small particles and dust.  This operation may be repeated several times to ensure a clean surface.  If vehicles are parked on the street, the un-swept area is noted and crews must then return to sweep that portion. Your patience and co-operation to keep vehicles off the streets during this period is appreciated.

Concentrated street sweeping will commence Sunday, April 9 through to Friday, April 14, 2017; subject to weather conditions.  This year, concentrated street sweeping t will take place during daytime operations only and will be performed in the following areas:   Downtown Core, Vanier, New Edinburgh, Sandy Hill, Glebe, Centretown, West Centretown, By-Ward Market, Lowertown, Ottawa East, Ottawa South and sections of Overbrook.

Visit ottawa.ca or call 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401) for more information about street cleaning schedules and operations.

Background Information

The City of Ottawa has a legislated responsibility through the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act'(AODA) - Integrated Accessibility Standards (IASR) to consult with the public, persons with disabilities, and the municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC). Consultation is required when constructing new or redeveloping:
  1. Exterior paths of travel (rest areas)
  2. On-street parking spaces
  3. Outdoor Play Spaces
  4. Recreation Trails
Consultation

The City is committed to ensuring that all City owned and operated spaces and facilities are inclusive and accessible to everyone and applies the Accessibility Design Standards to both new construction and major rehabilitation projects.

The City encourages public involvement in the planning and implementation of projects. This consultation session, specifically on exterior paths of travel (rest areas) and on-street parking space aligns with the legislative process. The City is seeking your input on these projects and the consultation process.  A list of projects, along with more context will be given at the consultation session.

Public consultation and information sharing is critical to the success of building a better Ottawa.

Accessibility is an important consideration for the City of Ottawa. If you require disability-related accommodation for this meeting, please contact AMB Inquiries.

Accessibility During Construction

Construction season is quickly approaching and the City wants you to know that mobility through construction sites is important to us.

The City of Ottawa's  Accessibility Design Standards has a section dedicated to Accessibility during Construction.  Section 2.11 applies to pedestrians affected by construction of new or redevelopment of existing City-owned or leased buildings, infrastructure and elements. This includes construction within the right-of-way as well as City of Ottawa buildings, parks, pathways and other public spaces. Pedestrians include residents, employees and visitors.

Accessibility during Construction ensures the provision of a safe and accessible path of travel for all pedestrians through and/or around the construction site. It ensures that pedestrians with disabilities, as well as those with increased mobility needs (parents with strollers and/or young children, pedestrians using canes, walkers, or wheelchairs, etc.), will be accommodated either through or around the construction site.

This means that construction areas must maintain:
  • sidewalk facilities for as long as possible;
  • a minimum 1.5m wide pedestrian facility shall be provided along at least one side of the corridor at all times. The facility shall include a free and unobstructed hard surfaced pedestrian surface acceptable for use by all pedestrians, including those with disabilities, and shall include pedestrian access to all buildings and street crossings;
  • in a clean and good state of repair through or around the construction site at all times. The 1.5m width shall not be reduced by protruding objects. If overhead works are required a 2.1m clear headroom shall be provided along the entire 1.5m width; and,
  • any change of level which is over 13mm height must be provided with a smooth, non-tripping transition.

Remember, you can request accessible formats of City public documents and we welcome your disability-related feedback on the accessibility of our services, programs and facilities through the following channels:

Ottawa Park Summit

QTSRCA has been asked to contribute topic ideas for the upcoming Ottawa Park Summit organized by Ecology Ottawa.

Do you have any questions or conversation topics that you would like a member of the community association to forward to the conference organizers?

You are also welcome to participate in the conference. Registration details are included in the previous blog posting.

Ottawa Park Summit - Organized by Ecology Ottawa

Join us at our inaugural Ottawa Park Summit – an innovative event that will bring together people from across the City of Ottawa that are active in their local parks to generate ideas and build momentum for better parks in our great city.

Ecology Ottawa is partnering with Park People, an independent charity that builds strong communities by animating and improving parks. We believe that when communities get involved, parks get better. The Ottawa Park Summit will bring together people involved in a wide range of park-related work, including “adopt a park” groups, community associations, community gardeners, tree planters, and community-builders that work on public health and safety, recreation, economic development and other park-based activities.

The event will be held on Earth Day – Saturday, April 22 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be followed by our first annual Earth Day Celebration starting at 5:00 p.m.

This unique event will foster connections between park stakeholders, generate ideas for ongoing cooperation, and build momentum to make our city parks even better! We will hear from city park staff, city councillors and community partners working to turn their public spaces into dynamic community places. This will include keynote speakers on critical issues affecting our city parks as well as breakout workshops on specific issues such as community gardens, park naturalization and tree planting, and investing in local parks.
