QTSRCA AGM Follow-Up: How Can We Serve You Better?

The QTSR Community Association held our AGM yesterday and thanks to the willingness of a group of volunteers to stand for election to the executive we will be continuing our activities next year, including maintenance of the skating rink in Kilreen Park.

A key topic of discussion at the meeting were how to engage more members of our community to participate in our events or to assist with skating rink maintenance as volunteers.  We discussed improving our communications strategy and engaging in more direct email-based communication with the community.  To start this process, we have now added a new link on our “Contact Us” page that you can click on to generate an email to the association if you would like to receive email notifications of our upcoming meetings and events.

We also discussed the possibility of introducing new types of events, activities, and services for our community – both live and virtual.  Ideas included running small contests for neighbourhood residents on our website such as photo or colouring contests, creating a community resources guide that could be downloaded off of our website, and trying out new types of activities such as participating in the “Clean the Capital” campaign.

What are your ideas on this topic? How can we better serve our community? In what kinds of activities would you like to become involved? How can we best reach out and share information with you?

We are your community association, so your ideas and suggestions matter! We look forward to hearing from you!

Reminder: QTSRCA AGM

QTSRCA Annual General Meeting

When: Sunday, October 23rd, 1:30-3:00
Where: Pinecrest Recreation Complex

The Queensway Terrace South Ridgeview Community Association (QTSRCA) will be holding our Annual General Meeting on Sunday, October 23rd from 1:30-3:00pm in the lounge of the Pinecrest Recreation Complex.

Your community association is in crisis. Since our founding in 2013, the number of volunteers have dwindled to the point that we are no longer able to achieve our mandate. Unless there are new volunteers, there will be a vote at this AGM to either do much less, or to fold entirely.

All members of our community are invited to attend and are encouraged to take the AGM as an opportunity to volunteer to become more active with the association.  If the community still wants an association, wants the ice rink, wants occasional events, and support to interact with the City, then we need your help

Ash Tree Removal along Pinecrest Creek Pathway / Abattage d'arbres le long du sentier du Ruisseau-Pinecrest

(Le français suit)
Hello,
We wish to inform you that the National Capital Commission (NCC) has begun cutting down ash trees in the Transitway corridor, between the 417 and Baseline Road. This work is necessary, as the trees are affected by the emerald ash borer, and pose a risk to the health and safety of users of the Pinecrest Creek Pathway.
The affected area is located in the Transitway corridor, between the 417 and Baseline Road, along Adirondack Drive, Parkway Drive and Fellows Road. This work, which began today, Monday, October 17, will be undertaken between 7 am and 5 pm, and should be completed on Friday, October 21, weather permitting. Where work requires pathway access, there will be a flag person controlling traffic in the area to ensure safety.
If you have any questions, please contact the NCC’s client services at 613-239-5000 or info@ncc-ccn.ca. For more details about the emerald ash borer management program, please visit our website.
We invite you to share this message with other members of your community.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Bonjour,

Halloween Events at Ottawa Museums

Get Spooked at Your Local Museums!

Play in the past. Make happy memories for the future.

On Friday and Saturday evenings from October 7 to 29, the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum transforms into a creepy, disturbing, and downright terrifying place. This year, you'll be subjected to a completely different experience that takes you through dark rooms and misty forests as you experience a truly unsettling evening. As night falls, are you willing to join a small group and catch the wagon that leads to the darkest of Grimm's fairy tales? Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact the museum to purchase your tickets today.

Are you brave enough to tackle Ottawa's newest haunted attraction? This October, Billings Estate National Historic Site becomes the Haunted House on the Hill on Friday and Saturday evenings from October 14 to 29. Will you walk through the old woods, explore the darkest corners of the house, and face your fears by the cemetery? Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Please contact the museum to purchase your tickets today.

Looking for something a little less scary? Bring the whole family to your local museum for fun Halloween-themed crafts, games, and activities. Come over to Nepean Museum for a Pumpkin Party on Saturday, October 22, complete with fortune-telling games, face painting, and of course, pumpkin decorating. Make your way to Pinhey's Point Historic Site on Sunday, October 23 for treats, tricks, pumpkin carving and spooky stories. On Sunday, October 30 at Billings Estate National Historic Site, join us for a Halloween Party and hunt down some movie monsters and try making your own fake blood. Visit the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum for Halloween Hijinks on Sunday, October 30 to trick-or-treat from house to house and try out our potions laboratory. Whatever you're into, our museums have something for everyone!

Have you ever been to a séance? Get in touch with the other side at Billings Estate National Historic Site on Sunday, October 23 and Sunday, October 30, and at Pinhey's Point Historic Site on Saturday, October 22 and Saturday, October 29. At this event, visitors will participate in a traditional séance, led by a psychic medium. Following the experience, participants will be treated to hot cider and can learn all about the mysterious side of history. Ages 18 and up only. Reservations are required for this popular experience, so email us to reserve your spot at the table.

Reservations open at 10 am on November 7 for our very popular Christmas Tea at Billings Estate National Historic Site. On December 11 and 18, gather your family and friends and treat yourselves to this special experience that celebrates Victorian Christmas through literature. Carolers dressed in Victorian costumes will set the tone for this festive tea, singing carols as tea and delicious holiday treats are served. Gluten- and dairy-free options are available with advance notice. Reservations are required, so please call us at 613-247-4830 x221 to reserve your seating.

Artefact Showcase

Did you have the chance to visit a fall fair this year? While many people today think of fairs as places for carnival rides and food trucks, in days past they were gathering places for farmers to meet up and chat. This automated milking machine would certainly have been a hot topic of conversation in the 1920s. In 1923, farmers were able to purchase this Surge Bucket Milker, invented by Herbert McCornack to make the difficult chore of milking cows easier. This brand of machine was so popular that it was used by 70% of farmers in the United States by 1955! Our Surge Bucket Milker was used by a local farmer and is now part of the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum's collection.

Will you be in the Bayshore area for trick-or-treating on Halloween? Come meet us at Fairfields Heritage House for candy and some simple and fun Halloween activities. The museum is located on Richmond Road near Bayshore Mall, so stop on by for some "tricks" and "treats" and to learn more about our upcoming programs and activities at the museum.

Looking to Volunteer?

Are you looking for a fun way to give back to your community? Why not consider volunteering at the City of Ottawa Museums? If you're a fan of Halloween, be sure to contact us to learn more about our cast and crew positions for the Haunted Historic Village and the Haunted House on the Hill – it'll be a scream! Looking for something a bit more festive? You can help out with our museums' upcoming Christmas programs. We're looking for people to help with setting up and decorations, as well as with sharing the Christmas spirit with visitors at our museums across the city. Contact us today to find out more!
