City of Ottawa Accessibility Spotlight

Third Review of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)

Ontario has appointed the Honourable David Onley, CM, O. Ont., senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto, Scarborough and Ontario’s 28th Lieutenant Governor, to lead a review of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

As part of the review process, Mr. Onley would like to hear from interested parties and people with disabilities to determine their views on the progress and effectiveness of the AODA, and their vision of accessibility through to 2025 and beyond. To learn more about this review, please visit the Third Review of the AODA website.

A public consultation session will be held on Monday August 27, 2018 from 2 to 5 pm at Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Richcraft Building, Room 2224, Ottawa.

Please register to attend the session in Ottawa. If you are not available to attend the session above, you may submit a written submission or register for an online session .

The Honourable David C. Onley will be accepting written submissions until October 1, 2018.

Nominations now open for the Celebration of People Awards

The City of Ottawa is a proud supporter of Celebration of People, which recognizes the contributions of those who promote accessibility and inclusion in Ottawa. This event will be held on December 3, 2018 and coincides with the United Nations International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

As lead sponsor, we are pleased to let you know that the call for nominations is now open!

The awards recognize the achievements and contributions of individuals, businesses and organizations promoting accessibility, inclusion and full community participation by citizens with disabilities.

There are 12 Celebration of People Award categories: 
The final nomination deadline is October 5, 2018.

We encourage you to nominate a colleague, client, employee, business, event, project, employer, friend or family member who should to be recognized and celebrated for their commitment to accessibility.

City of Ottawa - Fall registration

Fall registration is here! On Monday August 13 you’ll be able to register for all aquatics programs, including swimming lessons, online or by phone after 9 pm. For all other programs, like Hawaiian Dance, Chivalrous Sword Handling, Asian style cooking and even First Aid and CPR courses, registration starts on Wednesday August 15 at 9 pm online or by phone. Don’t forget, when you register you need to have your client barcode and family pin. For more details on all the available arts and recreation courses offered by the City of Ottawa visit Ottawa.ca.

City for All Women Initiative and community partners are asking candidates where they stand on creating an inclusive city:  
  • Hear what residents and organizations in Women Reducing Poverty Together have identified as their priority issues in this election. 
  • Learn the responses of City candidates surveyed on these issues. 
  • Express your opinions on these issues, as a candidate and as a resident.
Last March, City Council passed a motion to study the creation of a Special Liaison for Women’s Issues and a Women’s Bureau in the City of Ottawa.  
  • Learn how a Women’s Bureau could strengthen a gender analysis on policies and practices toward creating a city for everyone. 
 Sponsored by City for All Women Initiative (CAWI) in partnership with Cornerstone Housing for Women, Empow(Her), Immigrant Women’s Service Organization, The Well, OCTEVAW, Somali Women’s Circle Network, St Joe’s Women’s Centre, Women’s Initiatives for Safer Environments and more.

L’Initiative : une ville pour toutes les femmes et ses partenaires communautaires ont demandé aux candidats et candidates leur position sur la création d’une ville inclusive :
  • Apprenez ce que les résidentes et résidents ainsi que les organisations membres du projet Des femmes combattant ensemble la pauvreté ont cerné comme questions prioritaires dans cette élection.
  • Découvrez les réponses des candidats et candidates municipaux interrogés sur ces sujets.
  • Exprimez votre opinion sur ces questions en tant que candidat ou candidate et en tant que résidente ou résident.
En mars dernier, le conseil municipal a adopté une motion visant à examiner la création, au sein de la Ville d’Ottawa, d’un poste de liaison pour les questions concernant les femmes et d’un Bureau de la promotion de la femme.
  • Découvrez comment un Bureau de la promotion de la femme pourrait renforcer une analyse comparée selon le sexe des politiques et pratiques visant à créer une ville pour tous.

La Fondation de l’Hôpital Montfort est fière de s’associer aux Grands feux du Casino du Lac-Leamy pour leur édition 2018 qui se déroulera du 4 au 18 août.
