Base Ice for the Kilreen Rink - Volunteers Needed!

Now that the snow has finally arrived, work is underway for the skating rink at Kilreen Park. The snow-blowing company, Appleseed, has agreed to do an initial packing of the snow by Friday evening. This will take care of most of the hard work, but we’ll still need to level the surface by hand, using shovels, pieces of plywood, lawn rollers, and anything else you can come up with.

If you are available, please come out with your equipment on Saturday morning, 13 December, at 9:30AM to help out.

 After that, our rink volunteers will take over, beginning with the first few floodings and freezings to get the ice underway. We'll post here as soon as the rink is open!

Call for Rink Volunteers

This winter we'll once again be maintaining a community skating rink in Kilreen Park. Last year the rink was a great success. We had a dedicated group of volunteers to help maintain the ice and shovel off snow, and community members came out regularly to enjoy this great new amenity at our neighbourhood park.

We are currently recruiting volunteers to help with this year's rink! If you are interested, please email us your contact information so that our rink coordinator can be in touch with you. Volunteers will help to create an ice base as soon as weather permits; do periodic flooding to maintain the ice surface; and shovel on snowy days. The more people-power we have, the lighter the work for everyone.

There are many others ways that you can contribute time to the Community Association, such as distributing flyers, pitching in at community events, and translating our materials into French. Community members are also invited to serve on any of our committees (Transportation, Intensification, Events & Rec, and Communications). It all helps to make our community a better place to live!

Ottawa's Snow Go Programs

Do you need help finding a snow removal contractor for this winter? The City of Ottawa provides a number of tips and services to help residents with snow-clearing.

The Snow Go Program helps seniors and persons with disabilities find reliable contractors and/or individuals to clear snow. Once matched up with help, residents are responsible for making payments directly to the individual or contractor. Eligible seniors and persons with disabilities can also apply to the Snow Go Assist Program, which provides financial assistance to cover the costs of snow removal.

Also, residents searching for a reputable snow plow contractor can review the City's roster of licensed contractors listed on ottawa.ca. There, you will also find tips on how to handle a door-to-door sales pitch and how to understand the terms of your contract, and links to the Better Business Bureau and customer review websites.

Household Hazardous Waste Day

Residents can take household hazardous waste to a one-day depot on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 150 Tunney's Pasture Drive. These are items that cannot be safely left at the curb for pickup, including:

•               Aerosol containers
•               Batteries (automotive/household)
•               Propane cylinders
•               Fluorescent bulbs/tubes
•               Fire extinguishers
•               Fertilizers and pesticides
•               Needles and syringes
•               Pharmaceuticals
•               Paints and coatings
•               Pool chemicals

If you aren't able to turn in your household hazardous waste on the 7th, you can also return them to certain local retailers who accept this type of waste for recycling and proper disposal.
