Looking for adventure this summer? Apply all that energy outdoors with sports, games, crafts, special events and an out trip. Love to swim? Be sure to pack your swimsuit! If you prefer dry land, practice skills, drills and strategies; how to dribble, pass, shoot, head and control the soccer ball; go bar-down learning the fundamentals of ball hockey…or hop on the OC for a City Quest that finishes with a race in downtown Ottawa!

Put your skills to the test by building a robot or amaze your friends by making one disappear. Get adventurous with sports, games, crafts, swimming, special event and an out trip; hit the hardwood by shooting, dribbling and rebounding the basketball above the rim; or mix ball with a swim. Give little athletes the chance to learn a new sport on the daily or hone in on their hockey skills. As the Great One said, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so keep your Novice player in hockey shape this summer.

Community Yard Sale This Weekend

It is starting to feel like summer. As you are getting out to start work on your gardens and to undertake your spring cleaning remember that the Queensway Terrace South Ridgeview Community Yard Sale is coming up this weekend.

This is a great opportunity to clear out items that you don’t use any more and could make another person happy. Some of our neighbours raised money for their favour charitable causes. Last year members of our community sold a range of items including:

 

• Children’s toys
• Furniture
• Kitchen wear
• Sports equipment
• Books
• Ornaments
• Clothing

The community yard sale is a great opportunity to do some good, meet your neighbours, and maybe even find a new treasured item for yourself!

QTSR Park Playgroup

Are you hoping to get outside and enjoy this beautiful spring weather with your little ones? Why not come out and meet some other parents of young children in our community?

Come out and join us for a parents and babies/toddlers playgroup in Kilreen Park!

 We are going to be holding a bi-weekly playground in Kilreen Park starting on Wednesday, May 23rd.

Where: Kilreen Park

The splashpad is running, there are swings, playground, tennis courts, and lots of grass to run around in or have a picnic with your family!

Cardel Homes Lemonade Standemonium

We've finally got the sunshine and now we need the lemonade! Cardel Homes Lemonade Standemonium presented by Palladium Insurance is back for the 6th annual family fun tradition and we want YOU to be a part of it!

 

The Lemonade Standemonium is a new twist on the age-old idea of neighbourhood kids selling lemonade. It’s a fun-filled way for kids and families to Take a Stand and raise funds for people living with cancer.

 

Throughout the month of May and on June 2^nd, you’ll see youngsters, all across Ottawa sporting bright yellow t-shirts and selling lemonade to support Cancer Coaching and research at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and childhood cancer support programs offered by Candlelighters.

 

This is one fundraising event that you’ll definitely want to squeeze into your summer schedule.

Registration is now open for AccessAbility Day 2018!

A healthy body and mind are critical elements to your overall health. Join us for our 15th annual AccessAbility Day at Ottawa City Hall on Thursday May 31 and find out how keep your mind and body in top shape. Join Mayor Jim Watson and City Manager Steve Kanellakos who will deliver opening remarks. Mayor Watson will proclaim the day as AccessAbility Day in Ottawa. The event includes: Morning: Resource fair centred on health-related topics Between 10 and noon: Three athletes who have medaled for Canada at the Paralympics will share their experiences and how they maintain optimal mental and physical health. Join Todd Nicholson, Tyrone Henry and Jason Dunkerley for an exciting panel discussion Prizes and lunch Afternoon: Health presentations from Ottawa Public Health The event is free but you must register by May 24 to attend. Para Transpo customers may pre-book transportation to AccessAbility Day beginning at noon on Tuesday May 29. The City of Ottawa is a scent-sensitive environment. We ask those who will be attending the event please refrain from using or wearing scented product.

Get creative with Makers at the Museum

We’re excited to launch our latest programming series at Fairfields Heritage House: Makers at the Museum. Exercise your creative talents and immerse yourself in the historical setting of the museum’s 19th century Gothic Revival farmhouse. This month, learn how to make bath bombs (led by Tammy's Tub Treats) at our Mother’s Day Relaxation Workshop. In June, our beautiful grounds and gardens will inspire you at our A Plein Air Watercolour Workshop. Registration is required.

Explore local history on two wheels

Spring weather may have been slow to arrive, but we’re ready to roll out and explore Ottawa’s heritage. Cyclists of all experience levels are invited to bring their bike to Billings Estate National Historic Site and tune it up for the season in a workshop led by Velofix. Explore our newest exhibit, City in Motion, and check out one of our most unique artefacts — a 120 year old wooden bicycle. You’ll leave with info for a self-guided local history bike tour and a boxed lunch to enjoy. Registration is required. Ages 15 and up.

New to the sport of Orienteering? Test your navigation skills at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site — the only tools you’re allowed: a map, a compass, and your brain. Orienteering Ottawa will be on site with courses for all skills levels and BBQ lunch available for purchase.

It took all kinds of equipment, big and small, to make early rural life in our region possible. Journey with us through the major technological advancements of the 20s and 30s and check out the varied exhibitor displays and demonstrations from farm equipment to steam engines.

Treat Dad to a ‘historic’ day

June will be here before we know it! We’ve got you covered when it comes to family fun for Father’s Day. We’re highlighting all things ‘Pop’ Culture at Cumberland Heritage Village Museum. Antique cars will be on display at Billings Estate National Historic Site including our 1959 Cadillac Sedan de Ville. Explore the history of beer production at Fairfields Heritage House, the former site of the Scooped Roof Shanty Tavern. Tackle the challenges faced by early settlers like Hamnett Pinhey and successfully complete the ‘Ottawa Trail’ at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site.

Artefact Showcase

Do you recognize these once common household items? These vacuum tubes, sometimes also known as electron tubes or valves, contained electrodes that controlled an electric current. Vacuum tubes were essential to the operation of radio receivers, televisions, and phone systems during the first half of the 20th century before being replaced by smaller and more efficient transistor technologies. If you look closely at the photo, you’ll see labels for familiar companies like Rogers, Westinghouse, and even for Jones Bros., a local repair shop formally located on Rideau Street. Learn more about the impacts of mass communication technologies at ‘Pop’ Culture on June 17.

Did you know...

The birch-bark canoe, a First Nations technology, served as one of the primary methods of river transportation into the 1800s. In fact, following their wedding, Braddish and Lamira Billings travelled to their new home in Gloucester Township by canoe with a fleet of canoes to carry their belongings including larger furniture like their bed! Learn more about Ottawa’s transportation history at City in Motion. A preview of this exciting new exhibition is now open at City Hall until the end of May and will open at the City of Ottawa museums on May 13.

We’ve hit the road

Through the Eyes of Community: 150 Years of Ottawa’s History, a travelling exhibition developed by the City of Ottawa Museums with support from the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Museums Assistance Program, is now on display at Bytown Museum. This is the first time all five chronological modules of this exhibition have been displayed together. Through the Eyes of Community explores local history from the perspectives of a farmer, a woman, a veteran, a child, and a new immigrant.

Doors Open Ottawa coming this June!

Celebrate Ottawa’s built heritage with Doors Open Ottawa on June 2 and 3. This free annual event is the perfect opportunity to discover the history, cultural significance, and unique architecture of more than 140 buildings across Ottawa. Congratulations to our volunteers

A special congratulations goes out to our volunteers who achieved special milestones this year. Dallas Greeley was awarded the Mayor’s City Builder Award in recognition of her outstanding volunteerism. Dallas is also our City of Ottawa Museums volunteer who has contributed the most volunteer hours. Cumberland Heritage Village Museum volunteer Russ was recognized as the volunteer who has been working with us the longest. Carolynne, who can frequently be found helping out with our outreach activities, was acknowledged as our volunteer who has completed the most shifts. Thank you to all our new volunteers who attended an on-site introduction session at one or more of our museums this spring. We look forward to having you as part of the team!
